How to Pre-Shape Kalita Wave 155 Filter Paper

Pre-shaping a Kalita Wave 155 filter paper is a small step done before rinsing. The goal is simple: help the wave ribs open evenly so the paper sits in the dripper with a stable wall shape and a cleaner airflow gap.

How to pre-shape Kalita Wave 155 filter paper

  1. Start with a dry Kalita Wave 155 or compatible wave-style 155 paper filter.
  2. Check whether the ribs are flattened, tilted, or stuck together from packaging.
  3. Use a gentle forming step to open the ribs and support the wall angle.
  4. Place the shaped paper in the dripper without crushing the sides.
  5. Rinse gently, then brew with your normal recipe.

Do this before rinsing. Wet paper becomes softer, so it is easier to distort the ribs if you try to reshape it after water has already softened the structure.

Using V-Fold 155 for the shaping step

The V-Fold 155 paper former is VIHI Design’s dedicated tool for compatible Kalita Wave 155-style paper filters. It helps the paper return to a repeatable 155-size wave geometry before the filter touches the dripper.

V-Fold 155 is not a coffee filter and it does not replace the brewer. You still brew with your normal Kalita Wave 155 dripper and paper filter. The tool simply helps reduce one avoidable paper-shape variable.

What to look for after shaping

  • The ribs should be open rather than flattened against each other.
  • The paper wall should sit evenly around the dripper.
  • The bottom should feel centered and stable.
  • The paper should not be forced hard against the sidewall during rinsing.

If the filter still collapses during brewing, compare your result with the troubleshooting guide on Kalita Wave filter deformation and extraction.

Why this matters for repeatability

Kalita Wave brewing depends on a flat bed, controlled drainage, and the wave filter’s sidewall structure. If the paper changes shape from one brew to the next, the same recipe can behave differently. Pre-shaping does not make coffee automatic, but it makes one part of the brew easier to repeat.
