Every craft begins with a question.

Ours was simple: why are the first and last Kalita-style wave filters (155 / 185) never quite the same?

It started as curiosity. But the more we measured, the clearer it became — the filters at the beginning and end of each pack often differ in fold geometry by 5° to nearly 8°.

To most people, it’s just paper. But to us, that difference changes everything.

A 7° deviation means the base of the filter no longer sits flush against the dripper’s ridges. The water finds its own path — flowing ~0.4 seconds faster through one side, slower through the other. The result: a cup that lacks symmetry — slightly dull in the centre, slightly harsh at the edge.

So we began an experiment about structure — not taste.

We shaped, pressed, folded, and measured. The first prototype was crude. The tenth, only slightly better. By the time we reached the 466th prototype, we had completed over 1,180 brews, studied hundreds of flow curves, and mapped the deformation of paper under pressure to within ±0.1 mm precision.

And from all that — a number emerged: 58°.

58° is not arbitrary. It is the point where the tension of the filter wall aligns perfectly with the downward flow of water. At 57°, the wall collapses slightly. At 59°, it resists the dripper’s ridges. But at 58°, the paper breathes — stable, even, and free.

The V-Fold Paper Molding Tool

Built to capture that exact angle — and repeat it, perfectly, every single time — especially for Kalita-style wave filters used in everyday brewing.

  • Purpose-built for Kalita-style filters: refines the 20-wave fold geometry for consistent contact with dripper ridges and more even flow (sizes 155 / 185).
  • 58° shaping profile: our measured sweet spot for symmetry and balanced extraction.
  • ±0.1 mm tolerance: each unit is 3D-printed to apply consistent, even pressure across the entire filter surface.
  • Lab-tested: 466 prototypes, 1,180+ brews, hundreds of flow curves — across different paper densities, humidity and storage conditions.

We tested its geometry in London, Guangzhou and Kyoto. It doesn’t make your coffee stronger — it makes it more honest.

Because precision isn’t about obsession — it’s about respect. Respect for the craft, for the ritual, and for the person holding the cup.

That’s what this small tool stands for: quiet engineering, patient refinement, and the belief that beauty begins with symmetry.

Compatibility & Notes

  • Filter types: Kalita-style wave filters 155 / 185.
  • Use: place the filter, align, press to mold at 58°, then set in your dripper for a flatter seat and more even flow.
